Three lectures and accompanying student activites and focus questions relating to the plight of the Pantanal are ihncluded. Reflection writing, reading comprehension.
Students will investigate the process of recovering and mining gold. Due to the heavy metals used in recovery of gold, the true price of gold must also factor in the suffering of the workers, and the damage inflicted on the environment.
Students will investigate and understand the historical movements of people, as well as the curren socio-economic pressures that motivate current day migrations.
Students web cam on world cam sites to view a variety of locations around the world. They print their pictures of a chosen site. Grid it on to a larger paper and finish it in a medium of their choice.
Briefly introduce abacus to students to help them develop an appreciation for a culture difference. If students are interested in learning how to do some simple arithmetic operations using the abacus, the teacher can develop more lessons to teach.
Students identify personal cultural traits and compare them with classmates and other students of their age around the world, or at least the cultural ways of groups in different countries.
Students will have an opportunity to discover what the Hydrovia project is, how it relates to or can affect the Pantanal region of Brazil, and discuss the pro's and con's of this project in a debate format.
Independent study project to conceive, develop and complete a project of the student's own design on a topic of interest based on research into the Brasilian Pantanal.
Students will use unit multipliers to convert one unit to another, using metric/English unites, foreign exchange currencies, and ratios of various units. They will read information in context and understand the process of writing an equivalent mathematical equation or phrase from the given information.
